Swami Vishnudevananda Giri was the sixth Peethadhish of Kailash Ashram, Rishikesh, an institution once regarded as the highest seat of Advaita Vedanta study in Adi Shankaracharya's lineage. Revered as the foremost sanyasi of his time, he shaped the scholarly stature of the ashram and became a guiding light for sages across traditions. His extensive writings on the Prasthanatrayi- the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Brahmasutras-stand as pillars of Advaitic thought. His Tippanis (annotations) are considered foundational texts by serious students of Vedanta; his magisterial work on the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad remains unmatched. Born as Vishnu Das Hariyani in Talgajarda, Gujarat, his journey led from Vadodara to Kashi, and eventually to Rishikesh, where he took Sanyas. As Mahamandaleshwar, he travelled widely across the country and even into present-day Pakistan. Though relatively obscure today, he was extremely well-known in his time across the ascetic world.
